Fishing in Waterville

An idyllic base on one of the finest salmon and sea trout systems in Ireland — with everything you need to make it a holiday you'll want to repeat.

Five generations of local knowledge

Currane produces many salmon, sea trout and brown trout each year. Remarkably, 90 to 95% of all specimen sea trout — over 6lbs in weight — caught in Ireland are caught here.

Our expertise comes from five generations of our family providing gullies (guides), boats, tackle and local knowledge to visiting anglers. Guides and boat hire can be arranged, packed lunches provided, and groups are catered for. Evening meals are available for groups of five or more.

The loughs

Lough Currane

The biggest lake in the system, measuring 4 miles by 2 miles.

Lough Derriana

The top lough on the Currane system, holding brown trout of a larger than average size.

Lough Na Mona

A short distance from the Currane/Cummeragh system, this lough produces many of the very large sea trout.

Hill Loughs

For adventurous anglers, dozens of hill loughs hold unique strains of free-rising brown trout, some with large sea trout. Consult Ordnance Survey Map no. 83 (Discovery Series, 1:50,000) and Peter O'Reilly's Loughs of Ireland.

The rivers

The Cummeragh

Draining a catchment of 46 square miles, including 10 loughs, into Lough Currane. Levels hold well for several days after a spate on the five-mile stretch. Occasional spring salmon, better known for summer grilse to the end of September, and an excellent sea trout river from July onwards.

The Inny

A long, narrow mountain valley of some 47 square miles. Fishing, which can be excellent, is usually confined to about 24 hours following a spate. A good run of sea trout arrives from April, with smaller fish through the summer.

The Currane

The world-famous Butler's Pool sits within a short fishery of about 400 yards, draining Lough Currane and the entire Waterville system into the Atlantic. All fish entering the system must pass through here. Best known as a grilse fishery, with enormous runs of sea trout through July and August. Recommended flies: Jungle Cock Spider, Bibio, Bloody Butcher, Silver Doctor; salmon patterns include Stoat's Tail and shrimp patterns.
